NEW ORLEANS โย Tulane volleyball (2-0, 0-0 AAC) opens action at home this weekend as the team is scheduled to host Southeastern Louisiana (0-0, 0-0 Southland) on Thursday night before welcoming SFA (10-2, 0-0 Southland) to New Orleans for a double-header on Saturday in the Hertz Center.
The Green Wave will take on SELA at 6 p.m. on Thursday before facing SFA at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday. All three of this weekend's matches will be closed to the public.
The Olive and Blue went 2-0 in their opening weekend on the road, defeating Southern Miss (3-0) and UNO (3-2) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Junior outside hitter Makala Heidelberg was named the AAC's Defensive Player of the Week after totaling 16 digs against Southern Miss and a career-high 28 digs against UNO. Heidelberg now averages 5.50 digs per set, ranking second in the conference in current standings.
Senior Lexie Douglas led the team offensively in weekend one, earning 12 kills and 11 digs against Southern Miss and 14 kills and 12 digs against UNO to record two conesecutive double-doubles to start 2021 and earn a spot on the AAC's weekly honor roll.
Junior setter Amanda Giardina also notced a double-double in the first match of the season, totaling 12 assists and 12 digs. Giardina was just short of a second double-double against UNO, adding 34 assists and nine digs in the match.
Four players notched double-digit kills in Tulane's five-set win over the Privateers, as Douglas (14),ย junior right side hitter Yvette Burcescu (11), freshman right side hitter Anna Davis (10) and junior middle hitter Kayla Dinkins (10) paved the way for the win.
After one weekend of action, Tulane ranks second in The American in opponent hitting percentage (.120), third in assists per set (12.25), third in kills per set (13.38), third in blocks per set (2.12), and second in digs per set (19.25).
The Green Wave were picked to finish second in the West Division in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Dinkins and Douglas were both named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
SELA will open its spring 2021 season in this weekend's matchup after going 14-17 last year. The Green Wave hold a 40-5 record against the Lions, with Tulane earning a five-set win in the team's last meeting in 2019 in New Orleans.ย
After playing 10 matches in the fall, SFA holds a 10-2 record this season, most recently beating Tarleton State (3-1) and Louisiana Tech (3-0) at home. Tulane is 4-5 in its career against the Ladyjacks, last seeing them in 2017.
