Tulane Leads Louisiana in Graduation Success Rate
Dec 2, 2021 | General
NEW ORLEANS – The NCAA has released the latest Division I graduation rate data which includes the division's Graduation Success Rate (GSR). The results of the latest GSR date reflect the outstanding results for Tulane University student-athletes.
Â
Green Wave student-athletes posted an overall GSR of 93 percent, which stands four percentage points above the national average and ranks in the top 20 among all Football Bowl Subdivision institutions. Tulane's overall GSR is the highest in the state of Louisiana and ranks second in the American Athletic Conference.
Â
"Today's graduation success rates once again reflect the value our student-athletes place on achieving academic excellence at the highest levels," Tulane Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. "As a department, we are determined to set a standard that others should aspire to achieve and I am so proud of our student-athletes commitment to setting that standard. Our student-athletes are fortunate to be supported by a coaching staff and academic support staff who place a high priority on achieving at the highest level off the field, as well as on the field."
Â
Tulane featured eight teams with a perfect GSR which included men's tennis, women's basketball, women's bowling, women's golf, women's swimming and diving, women's cross country/track, women's volleyball and women's sailing. Tulane's eight programs with a perfect GSR are the most among all institutions in The American.
Â
"I could not be more thrilled of our student-athletes and their continued dedication of academic excellence at one of the nation's premiere institutions," Deputy Director of Athletics Charvi Greer said. "This is truly an outstanding accomplishment for everyone who contributes to the matriculation of our student-athletes."
Â
The national GSR for the entering class of 2014 increased by one point from 2013 to 89 percent.
Â
The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) to more accurately assess the long-term academic success of student-athletes. The rate holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport. Under the calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing transfer students who leave in good academic standing. The outgoing transfers are included in the receiving institution's GSR cohort.
Â
The GSR allows student-athletes six years to earn their degree. The 2020-21 rate is based on student-athletes who entered college in the fall of 2014, the most recent data available. The four-year GSR rate also includes the freshmen classes of 2011, 2012 and 2013. The rate shows the percentage of those student-athletes who earned a degree by the spring of 2020. This marks the 20th year GSR data has been collected.
