Track Takes Men's, Women's 5000m at Black and Gold Invitational

ORLANDO—The Tulane track and field team ended the first day at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by UCF on a strong note with multiple victories and new records.
"Across the board I think our team looked generally flat and rusty today, but we had some highlights, especially at the end," director of track and field Eric Peterson said. "We worked through a few rough spots and finished the meet on a high note. We look forward to having a stronger day tomorrow."
Trina Malej competed in the long jump for the first time in the event in over a year. She landed with a mark of 5.76m which was good for fourth place. Malej competes again Saturday in the triple jump looking to add to last meet's win with a mark of 12.63m. Nastja Modic won the pole vault for the Green Wave with a mark of 3.65m.
Danielle Line placed sixth in a competitive hammer throw, earning sixth place with a mark of 45.32m which earns her fifth place in the Tulane record book. Line competes again tomorrow in the discus throw at 9 a.m.
To close off the first day, Bridgid Selfors won the 5000m with her time of 18:25:00. Then in the men's 5000m, Evans Kipchumba raced to first place with Ian Valdez behind in second. Kipchumba won with a time of 15:34.02 and Valdez recorded a time of 15:48.55, crushing his previous best of 16:10.81.
Tulane begins action Saturday at 9 a.m., with the discus, followed by the triple jump at 11 a.m. and the shot put at noon. Track events begin at 11 a.m., with the 4x100m relay and then the 3000m at 11:10 a.m. Next will be the 100m hurdles at 11:50, followed by the 400m at 12:20 p.m. Then the 800m at 1:20 p.m. and finally the 4x400m relay at 2:00 p.m. to close out the weekend for the Green Wave.
