TAMPA, Florida — The Tulane volleyball team (7-9, 5-3 AAC) fell to American Athletic Conference East Division opponent USF (6-5, 3-3 AAC) in three sets (21-25, 19-25, 22-25) on Friday in the Corral.
"USF played well. We did not pass and serve to our level and paid the price," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We fought back but made errors at critical moments. Tomorrow, we must get back to our game plan and level of execution."
Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Martin led the way for the Green Wave offensively, totaling nine kills his hitting .250. Junior setter Taylor Henigsman notched 24 assists in three sets.
Martin and Henigsman also recorded nine digs in the match, topping the defensive stats alongside sophomore defensive specialist Jillian Dits who also had nine. Henigsman and sophomore middle hitter Lauryn Green each added two blocks.
Tulane took an early 6-4 lead to start the match before USF came back to tie it up at 7-7. A 4-0 run from the home team put the Bulls ahead, 14-10, where they would ultimately stay to take the first set 25-21 and a 1-0 match lead. A 3-0 Green Wave run made it a one-point game at 18-19 but a 4-1 Bulls run extended their lead to 23-19 before closing it out with a kill.
Both teams came out battling to start the second set, with a tied score at 6-6. An 8-1 run from the Bulls put USF ahead, 15-10, forcing a Tulane timeout. A block from Henigsman and freshman middle hitter Anna Davis was followed by a 3-0 Green Wave run to make it a two-point game at 16-18 and force a USF timeout, but the Bulls were able to hold onto it before finishing it out, 25-19.
Tulane took a four-point lead in the third set, up 11-7 after a kill from Martin, a solo block from senior outside hitter Lexie Douglas and a block from Henigsman and Green sent the team on a 3-0 run. A 5-0 run from the Bulls put them ahead 17-16 before a 3-0 Green Wave run put Tulane back on top at 20-19. After being tied at 21-21, South Florida went on a 4-1 run to take the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
The Olive and Blue are back in action on Saturday as the team readies for a second match at USF beginning at 10 a.m. in Tampa, Florida.
