Men's Tennis Rolls Past LSU, 6-1
Mar 21, 2021 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The No. 27 Tulane men's tennis team collected its third straight win and completed a home-and-home series sweep with a 6-1 win over No. 41 LSU on Sunday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (10-5) have now won six of the last seven meetings against LSU (10-9) after also defeating the Tigers, 5-2, in Baton Rouge on Feb. 7.
Tulane seized the early momentum in doubles, bouncing back from a 6-2 loss on court three to claim a pair of convincing wins on courts one and two, respectively. Hamish Stewart and Ewan Moore completed a 6-3 win over 60th-ranked Ronald Hohmann and Rafael Wagner at the No. 1 spot, while Akos Kotorman and Billy Suarez defeated Joey Thomas and Joao Graca by the same count on court two.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles, the 40th-ranked Stewart quickly doubled the tally with a commanding, 6-3, 6-1 victory over the 99th-ranked Hohmann on court one. The win avenged a three-set defeat in the first meeting this season and improved Stewart's record to 10-3 atop the lineup this spring while collecting his fourth win over a top-100 opponent.
LSU got on the scoreboard with a straight-set win on court give, but it was all Tulane from that point on. Freshman Rafael de Alba cruised past Thomas, 6-3, 6-1, on court six and Suarez dismantled Boris Kozlov, 6-4, 6-2, on court four to clinch the overall match and extend the advantage to 4-1.
Luis Erlenbusch was the only three-set winner, outlasting Graca, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, on court three, before the 53rd-ranked Moore added the sixth and final team point by closing out Wagner, 7-6(3), 6-3, on court two.
Up next, Tulane hosts South Alabama in a rescheduled match on Wednesday, March 24 at 2 p.m.
