Mar 24, 2021 | Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS—Tulane University track and field junior Tri Malej has been named the American Athletic Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week the league announced today.
Malej was honored for a standout performance in the triple jump at last week's UCF Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando, Florida. Malej won the event with a personal-best mark of 13.12m.
"Tri really had a breakthrough performance in Orlando by going over 13 meters for the first time," director of track and field Eric Peterson said. "Even Tri's second-best and non-wind-aided jump was very good for this early in the season. We are hoping that this is going to get Tri to consistently compete at this higher level."
The distance recorded in the event currently ranks first in the NCAA East Region and third nationally for the 2021 outdoor season.
Malej now has two straight wins in the triple jump after also winning the event at the outdoor season opener in Mobile, Alabama at the Jaguar Opener on March 5 with a distance of 12.63m. Malej was an elite competitor during the indoor season, placing first in the triple jump in all three indoor meets for the Green Wave.
As a freshman in 2019, Malej qualified for the NCAA DI East Regional meet, placing 30th with a mark of 12.40m in the triple jump.
The Tulane track and field team competes next in Birmingham, Alabama at the UAB Spring Invitational April 2-3.
