NEW ORLEANS โ Theย Tulane volleyball team (8-9, 5-3 AAC) heads back on the road this weekend, looking to secure a spot in the American Athletic Conference tournament in the team's final regular season conference matchups at Tulsa (2-6, 2-6 AAC).
The Green Wave will face the Golden Hurricane on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Reynolds Center. Both matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
In their last time out, the Olive and Blue split a weekend series with AAC East Division opponent USF, falling to the Bulls (0-3) on Friday before earning a four-set win Saturday.
Freshman middle hitter Anna Davis shined last weekend on the court, totaling 18 kills while hitting a conference-leading .567. In Tulane's win on Saturday, Davis recorded a career-high 15 kills on 18 attacks with zero errors, hitting .833 -- the second-best attack percentage in program history. In the victory, the first-year Green Wave also earned a career-high seven blocks, leading the conference with an average of 1.33 blocks per set after two matches. The freshman was named the AAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Davis' first time receiving the honor and Tulane's first since 2016.
Also stepping up for Tulane on both ends of the court last weekend was freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Martin, who earned her sixth double-double this season against the Bulls on Saturday, notching 10 kills and 13 digs to total 146 and 161 this season, respectively.
Serving as a consistent leader for the Green Wave's offense this year is senior outside hitter Lexie Douglas, who has recorded 231 kills in 2021 to average 3.61 per set, ranking sixth in the conference in kills per set and fourth in points per set (4.09). Douglas has notched double-digit kills in 14 of Tulane's 17 matches this season, totaling seven double-doubles in her final season Uptown.ย
A force for the Green Wave at the net in 2021 is junior middle hitter Kayla Dinkins. Dinkins has totaled 74.0 blocks this season, averaging 1.16 to rank fourth in the conference. The third-year middle has earned five or more blocks in seven matches this year, also recording a total of 144 kills to average 2.25 per set.
Defensively, freshman libero Sophia Ervanian ranks seventh in the conference with an average of 4.27 digs per set in her first season Uptown, totaling 218 digs in 51 sets of action. The Green Wave newcomer has recorded double-digit digs in nine of the team's last 10 matches, recording 30 or more digs in two matches.
Junior setter Taylor Henigsman has stepped up big for the Green Wave this season, totaling 461 assists to average 7.68 per set in 60 sets, ranking eighth in the conference. Henigsman has recorded 40 or more assists in six of the last seven matches, earning a career-high 54 in Tulane's win over Wichita State. The junior has also totaled 14.0 blocks and 18 kills so far this season.
The Green Wave were picked to finish second in the West Division in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Dinkins and Douglas were both named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Tulsa is 2-6 overall and in conference play, most recently falling to SMU in back-to-back 0-3 losses on the road. The Green Wave are 16-17 all time against the Golden Hurricane, owing a 4-10 record on the road. In the team's last meeting in 2019, Tulane defeated Tulsa in five sets at home.
The Golden Hurricane are tied for second in the conference with an average of 2.14 blocks per set, also ranking second in digs with an average of 18.71 per set. Senior middle blocker Maggie Hembree leads Tulsa offensively this season, totaling 66 kills to average 2.36 per set while also adding 32.0 total blocks. On the defensive end, junior outside hitter Hannah Overmyer leads the way for the Golden Hurricane, totaling 144 digs in eight matches to average 2.32 per set.
