
Beach Volleyball Wraps Up Competitive Day at FIU Surf 'N Turf

MIAMI — The Tulane beach volleyball team (11-9, 2-7 CCSA) dropped two competitive matches on day one of the FIU Surf 'N Turf, falling to No. 12 Florida Atlantic (2-3) and No. 20 Florida Gulf Coast (2-3) on Friday.
From the No. 3 spot, senior Addison Hermstad and sophomore Samantha Mehlman went 2-0 on the sand, taking down Florida Atlantic's Abby Jackson and Courtney Moon in straight sets, 21-14, 21-19, before beating FGCU's Maddison Parmelly and Lexie Hamilton, 21-14, 21-18.
Graduate student Avery Arellano and freshman Lara Torruella also earned the win over FAU on court four, defeating Kaila Dorish and Jillenne Cangelosi in three sets (21-15, 15-21, 15-12).
Sophomore Kendall Peters and graduate student Eva Torruella were successful on court one in the second match of the day, earning a come-from-behind, three-set win over FGCU's Giovanna Borgiotti and Kirstine Garder (12-21, 21-13, 15-12).
Graduate students Tarin Mergener and Allie Olsonoski were just short of earning the win over FGCU's Kacie Johnson and Kayla Whetstone from the number two spot, falling 19-21 in the first set before taking the second, 22-20, and dropping the third, 10-15.
In an exhibition match against FAU, senior Gabriella Becerra teamed up with freshman Maddie Speicher to defeat Maylin Bouffard and Logan Mignerey in two sets, 21-19, 21-13. Becerra and Speicher also forced a third set of action against Florida Gulf Coast's Jenna Banz and Trinity Rosales on court five, taking the first set 21-18 before falling 15-21 in the second and 10-15 in the third.
The Green Wave will be back in action on Saturday for two more matches in the FIU Surf 'N Turf, taking on Tampa at 7 a.m. and No. 13 FIU at 10:30 a.m.
