MOBILE, Ala. — The Tulane track and field team had a thrilling first outdoor meet of the 2021 season, as the Green Wave women snagged first place at the Jaguar Open with a score of 190 points.
"Starting off the season with a team victory is a real boost to our team and our program," director of cross country and track and field Eric Peterson said. "It kicks off the season in just the way we hoped."
In addition to the team win, there were seven other individual wins for the Green Wave. A highlight in the pole vault was Nastja Modic who won the event with a height of 4.03m, a great early season mark just shy of her personal record of 4.07m.
In the long jump, Tulane took the win with a powerful performance by Migle Muraskaite at a mark of 5.60m. Kristen O'Handley also earned points for the team with a third place finish and a mark of 5.31m.
Muraskaite did not stop there. The senior placed second in the javelin with a distance of 40.25 earning herself a 10th-place spot in the Tulane record book. Muraskaite also placed sixth in the shot put for a seventh-place spot in the record book with her 13.17 mark.
O'Handley also earned third place in the 400m with a time of 56.29 and second place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.58.
For more individual wins, Trina Malej won the triple jump with her distance of 12.63m. To finish out the Green Wave field event victories, in the javelin, Hannah Patrick won the event with a 40.75m heave for a ninth-place spot in the Tulane record book.
The Green Wave took the top four spots in the 400m, as Hunter Robinson won the event with a time of 55.55. Maya Harewood came in second at 56.23, O'Handley to follow and then Asja Thompson in fourth with 57.81.
The hurdles proved to be another spot for Tulane athletes to shine. Kyah Loyd won the 100m hurdles with a notable time of 13.93. And then, Louise Jones took the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.03, good for 10th place in the Tulane record book.
"We have really improved in both the balance and the depth of our team in several events," Peterson said. "You can see that in the number of shot-putters, discus throwers, long jumpers and pole-vaulters who competed today."
Tulane looks forward to their next outdoor competition March 19-20 in Orlando, Fla., at the Black & Gold Invitational hosted by UCF.
