Men's Tennis Defeats SMU on the Road, 4-2

DALLAS - The No. 30 Tulane men's tennis team battled back from a lost doubles point to secure its third road win of the season, 4-2, over American Athletic Conference foe No. 46 SMU on Saturday afternoon.
Tulane (7-4) has now won six straight meetings against the Mustangs dating back to the 2014 season.
"We had a great battle today with a very tough SMU team," director of tennis Mark Booras said. "They set the tone in doubles from the very beginning and made us play from behind the whole time. We were a little hesitant and it cost us the doubles point."
SMU (9-7) took an early advantage on all three doubles courts before earning a 6-3 win on court three and a 6-4 victory on court one.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Green Wave stormed back with three consecutive victories in straight sets to turn the tide. Fifth-year senior Luis Erlenbusch cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three over Tomas Vaise, before classmate and 53rd-ranked Ewan Moore dismantled Liam Krall, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Freshman Fynn Kuenkler was close behind with the third point, defeating Jordi Redelijk, 7-5, 6-1, on court six.
SMU cut its deficit in half, 3-2, with a straight-set win on court six, and despite the matches on courts one and four, respectively, going into deciding third sets, Tulane was able to pull ahead on both.
Playing at No. 4, freshman Billy Suarez bounced back from a lost first frame, 6-4, to win the second, 7-5. Despite a 3-3 tie midway through the third, Suarez won the last three games to clinch the match for the Wave.
"The guys did a good job in singles responding and getting a bunch of first sets, staying very tough on the big points to gain some momentum back," Booras said. "It went back and forth for a bit, but Billy (Suarez) did a great job of staying focused and getting a huge 2nd set to swing the momentum back in our favor again and then keep it rolling to close it out in the third set for the clinching point.
Ranked 40th nationally, senior Hamish Stewart led, 5-2, in the third set when Suarez's clinch concluded the match.
The Green Wave will remain in Dallas to face No. 35 Texas Tech on Sunday, March 7 at the SMU Tennis Complex. First serves are scheduled for 3 p.m.
