Mar 7, 2021 | Men's Tennis
DALLAS, Texas - The 30th-ranked Tulane men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to No. 35 Texas Tech in a neutral site match at the SMU Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Green Wave (7-5) got an early jolt from their doubles play, as Akos Kotorman and Billy Suarez cruised to a 6-2 win over Isaac Arevalo and Reed Collier on court two. Despite the Red Raiders (11-6) leveling the count with a 6-4 win on court one, Luis Erlenbusch and Fynn Kuenkler earned a late break on court three to close out a 7-5 victory against Dimitrios Azoidis and Ilgiz Valiev to give the Wave a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Despite both teams winning three first sets in singles, the momentum quickly flipped in favor of Texas Tech when they closed out courts two, four and five, respectively, in straight sets to take a 3-1 advantage. Ranked 40th, Hamish Stewart closed the gap on court one with a 7-5, 6-2 win over 37th-ranked Parker Wynn for his third win over a top-40 player this spring.
Luis Erlenbusch was close behind and evened the score at three-all when he defeated Franco Ribero, 6-4, 6-4, on court three.
Court six was the final match remaining where Rafael de Alba took a 7-5 win in the first set before falling in the second, 6-2, to Arevalo. Despite falling behind, 3-1, de Alba leveled the set at three-all, but Arevalo was able to win the final three games to clinch for the Red Raiders.
Up next, Tulane gets set for a road match against American Athletic Conference foe Memphis on Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
