Beach Volleyball Closes Regular Season, Goes 2-2 in Gulf Shores Tournament

GULF SHORES, Alabama — The RV Tulane beach volleyball team (21-13, 8-11 CCSA) went 2-2 in the team's final weekend of regular season action, defeating Southern Miss (4-1) in two matches while falling to No. 7 TCU (0-3) and No. 4 FSU (0-5).
In the first match of the weekend against TCU on Saturday, that was ultimately cut short due to weather in Gulf Shores, freshman Lara Torruella and sophomore Ashton Mares were in the middle of a three-set battle against Tara Patton and Trinity Cavanaugh (21-17, 19-21, 6-4), while senior Rio Frohoff and sophomore Maddie Speicher came back to win the second set and forced a third against Horned Frogs' Jordan Westendorff and Caroline White (16-21, 30-28, 0-1) in the unfinished match.
Earning two wins over Southern Miss on Sunday was senior Addison Hermstad and sophomore Samantha Mehlman, defeating Hallie Phelan and Haley Hop 21-13, 21-9 on court two before defeating the Golden Eagles a second time in three sets, 21-9, 17-21, 15-6.
Also going 2-0 against USM was graduate students Avery Arellano and Tarin Mergener from the No. 3 position, beating Breleigh Favre and Kellie Garraway with 21-15, 22-20 scores in the first match and 21-15, 18-21, 15-9 scores in the second match.
Senior Rio Frohoff and freshman Maddie Speicher were successful from the No. 5 spot, defeating Southern Miss' Kaylie Beck and Melanie Miller in three sets (19-21, 21-17, 15-7) in match one before earning a straight-set win over Golden Eagles' Valeria S. Papakyria and Kai Norman (21-13, 21-12) in the second match.
Helping Southern Miss to a 4-1 win in the first match on Sunday was graduate student Eva Torruella and sophomore Kendall Peters on court one, taking down Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson in three sets, 21-17, 19-21, 15-9. Torruella and Mares earned the win in the second match against Southern Miss, defeating Madison Lawler and Olivia Hepworth, 21-11, 21-16.
With the regular season behind them, the Green Wave are now set to prepare for the CCSA Championship next weekend in Huntsville, Alabama, from Friday to Sunday.
