Tulane Volleyball Sweeps Past Alabama A&M Friday Night
Aug 28, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
The Tulane volleyball team fought past a scrappy Alabama A&M Friday evening to finish the day with a sweep, as the Green Wave won by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-15 to end day one of the Tulane Innovational at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Tulane (2-0) produced its second strong offensive showing of the day, hitting .380 as a team over the course of the three sets to power past the Bulldogs (0-2) and go into Saturday's finale with a chance to claim the tournament championship.
Senior Mackenzie Martin was one of four Tulane players to finish the day with nine or more kills, hitting .312 on the match with a block. Yvette Burcescu added six of her own to finish with an average of .400.
The setting game was sound as well. Chelsea Harvey had 31 assists over the three-set-match and four kills of her own.
Junior libero Jillian Dits did her part on the back line. She finished with a double-double on the match and two service aces.
The Bulldogs never got a handle on the Green Wave's explosive offense. With the score knotted at eight, a kill from Lexie Douglas gave Tulane the lead back and was followed by an unstoppable 11-point scoring run that put the game out of reach.
The second set was interesting in spurts, as Tulane was able to start strong and jump out to a 15-4 lead early. Slowly, Alabama A&M began to find pockets of offense to pull closer to Tulane throughout eventually cutting the deficit but never coming within eight. The set went final at 25-17, the closest final of the match.
The third and final set was a carbine copy of the two before it. Martin and Urquhart did most of the heavy lifting for Tulane at the net. With a combined seven kills and nine assists. They were able to help the Green Wave offense get the boost it needed to put the Bulldogs away. A joint effort on the back line of Dits and Sophia Ervanian held true with eight dig and two service aces. The match was summed up with the final score of 25-15.
Tulane continues its opening tournament tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse against the Cal Golden Bears.
