
Tulane Drops Match One of the Green Wave Invitational in Five Sets

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Tulane Volleyball (6-4, 0-0 AAC) drops a five-game nail bitter to Sam Houston State (7-3, 0-0 WAC) to open up the Green Wave Invitational inside Bartow Arena. The Wave took on the Bearkats in the first match of the invitational on the campus of the University of Alabama Birmingham. Tulane put up a fair fight but couldn't pull through the tough bearkat defense.

The offense was led by senior middle blocker Kayla Dinkins. The Pre-season AAC award winner had 11 kills, 15 points and seven blocks. Freshman Michelle Urquhart didn't deviate from her standard collecting 11 kills, 14.5 points and did her part defensively with 13 digs. Urquhart grabbed her third collegiate double-double while hitting .229.

Freshman setter Chelsea Harvey assisted in 42 kills and picked up nine of her own.Â

Sophia Ervanian got her first start this season in the Libero position. The sophomore claimed 27 digs off of Bearkat hits.Â

Tulane took set one 25-18 with 13 kills and hit .314. After being down 5-2 to open the match Tulane went on a 5-0 score run off the serve of Urquhart, Wave led 7-5. The Tulane offense took off from that point, the set went final at 25-18.

The Wave dropped sets two and three by way of 25-22. Both sets were loaded with defense on the Tulane side, the Wave was held to just a .108 clipped combined.Â

Set four went to the Olive and Blue who outscored SHSU 25-17. The set was within inches until a six-point run where the Wave strung together three kills, a couple of attacking errors and an ace to pull ahead 13-7. Tulane never looked back; they held the led until the set finialed at 25-17.

Tulane never got in the grove for set five. They went down -04 to open it up but managed to battle back to the tune of 8-6. After a Bearkats time out SHSU outscored the Wave 7-3 to close out the set 15-9.Â

The Wave will be back in action at 4:30 p.m. inside Bartow Arena to take on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech (8-3, 0-0 Big-12).
