Tulane Men’s Tennis Takes Down Cal, 4-3
Jan 17, 2022 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2021-22 schedule on Monday at the City Park Tennis Center with a hard fought 4-3 win over the Cal Golden Bears.
The Green Wave clinched the win thanks to Rafael De Alba's three-set win over Cal's Derrick Chen, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. Tulane also picked up singles wins from Luc Hoeijmans and Fynn Kuenkler.
"I felt like the guys really stepped up to the challenge," head coach Mark Booras said. "We brought a great PAC-12 team in here. These guys (Cal) have seen and done everything and we thought, let's start the season different this year. They are a tough squad."
The Green Wave opened the match on a high note, as they collected the doubles point thanks to wins from the duos of Hoeijmans and Kuenkler and De Alba and Billy Suarez.
"We are still trying to find our identity," Booras said. "We have such a young team. We started four sophomores and two freshman today. The guys really put their blinders on today and just battled."
Tulane returns to action on Thursday, as it plays host to Alcorn State.
