Matthew Boone Announced as Track & Field/Cross Country Program’s Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator
Nov 14, 2022 | Cross Country, Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University Track & Field/Cross Country programs announced on Monday the hiring of Matthew Boone as an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator for both programs.
"I want to thank Coach Myers and Mr. Gosha for the opportunity to join the Tulane Athletics family," stated Coach Boone. "I am excited to work with the student-athletes of Tulane's Track & Field/Cross Country program and look forward to helping Coach Myers achieve his vision."
"I'm elated to add another coach to our staff who has previously served in a head coaching role," Tulane Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Adrian Myers said. "That is such great experience and vision to bring to our program. Coach Boone has been successful at every stop of his career and has grown into one of the most well-rounded young coaches out there. He had an immediate impact as head coach at Jacksonville State and set the foundation for them to grow as a program. His ability to fuel recruiting and advance areas that he directly oversaw within the program is very evident. Coach Boone brings a high attention to detail, strong communication skills, and a clear ability to connect with the athletes. We have moved the needle today with this hire and I look forward to watching Matthew grow even more within our program. I'm blessed to welcome him onto our Green Wave staff."
Boone comes to Tulane after most recently serving as the head coach of the Jacksonville State University Cross Country and Track & Field programs from May 2020 until November of 2022. In his three years leading the JSU program, Boone was responsible for 29 (nine indoors and 20 outdoors) top-10 performers across 13 events and helped coach three student-athletes to school records in events.
In 2021-22, Boone directed JSU in its return to the ASUN Conference. After not having an indoor championship in 2021, Jacksonville State placed seventh in the league at the indoor meet, the highest conference finish since 2017. For the outdoor championships, JSU scored 40 points and finished sixth, marking the highest outdoor championship points total since 2018, and best team finish since 2016 when the program was in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Greta Romei was the individual ASUN Conference Champion in the javelin under Boone's watchful eye.
In his first season at the helm in 2020-21, the Gamecocks navigated a delicate schedule still affected by COVID-19 restrictions. The cross country season was delayed by the OVC until the spring of 2021 and then ran simultaneously with the indoor track season. The only championship held the year was for outdoor track and field, where JSU placed eighth as a team while seeing Baylee Porch set the school heptathlon record with 4,861 points.
Prior to the three most recent years leading the program at Jacksonville State, Boone worked as the lead assistant for the Gamecocks the previous three campaigns (January 2018-May 2020). In that period, he was responsible for 27 (18 indoor, nine outdoor) top-10 performers across 13 events and aided the program set three school records.
In his first season with the program, Jacksonville State established new field event school records in the shot put, discus, javelin, pole vault, long jump, and triple jump. The 2018 season also saw the team set the shot put (indoor) and discus record set (outdoor) while Marelly Balentina, a javelin thrower, became the first Gamecock to qualify for a NCAA Regional Championship since 2012.
As a collegiate athlete himself from 2011-2015, Boone was a four-year member of Florida State's Track and Field team, where he focused primarily on the javelin
At FSU, Boone was a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as well as a member of the Florida State Athletics Board. Following his collegiate career for the Seminoles, he spent the spring of 2016 as an assistant track and field coach at Lawton Chiles High School in the Tallahassee area. His boys team claimed the 3A FHSAA state championship, while he coached the school record holder in both the high jump and long jump on the girls' side.
In the summer of 2016, Boone began his master's work at Mississippi State, joining the track program as a volunteer assistant. His main duties involved working with jump events and multi-event athletes. His athletes once again set new school marks in multiple events (women's high jump and triple jump). He helped coach three conference scorers and four national qualifiers.
Boone received his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Florida State in 2015 and completed his master's in exercise physiology from Mississippi State in 2018.
The Tulane Track & Field program starts the 2022-23 indoor season on Dec. 2 with a trip to participate in the Birmingham Southern College Ice Breaker event at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama.
