Tulane Men’s Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale to No. 31 SMU
Apr 10, 2022 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The No. 64 Tulane University men's tennis team fell in its final match of the regular season to No. 31 SMU 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. After winning the doubles point over the Mustangs, the Green Wave was unable to hold on to the momentum as SMU claimed victories on five of the six singles courts to clinch the match.
With the loss, Tulane finishes the regular season with a 7-14 record overall and a 4-8 mark in home matches this year.
The Green Wave got out to a strong start in the match by winning the doubles point. The pairing of Fynn Kuenkler and Luka Petrovic got Tulane in the win column with a 6-3 victory to start the match. After SMU tied it up with a win on court three, the duo of Charlie Barry and Benji Jacobson clinched the doubles point for the Wave with a 6-4 win over the 65th-ranked pairing in the nation.
The momentum flipped in singles play as the Mustangs earned wins in the first set on four of the six courts. Tulane responded to force a third set on four courts after SMU took a 2-1 lead. Kuenkler, Luc Hoeijmans, Alex Bancila and Rafael de Alba each battled to the brink taking each of their matches to a decisive third set. Unfortunately, SMU managed to claim wins in three of those four third sets to clinch the match 5-2.
Up next, the Green Wave will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The tournament will run Thursday through Saturday, April 21-23.
