Tulane Women’s Sailing Eighth After First Day at the ICSA National Championship
Apr 23, 2022 | Sailing
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Tulane University sailing women's team finished the opening day of the ICSA Women's Team Race National Championship in eighth place out of 12 teams on Saturday. The Green Wave posted a 4-6 record in the round robin racing on the first day of the regatta.
"Today was a very hard-fought day of competition," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We had some great wins, but unfortunately let a few too many slip away late. We are incredibly proud of how far we've come with such a young squad, and we certainly showed this season that we can take wins off any team."
Entering as the No. 10, Tulane took to the waters of the Providence River to compete among 12 of the best teams in the nation Saturday. The Green Wave went 4-6 on the day racing earning wins against Georgetown, MIT, South Florida and Michigan. The Wave's 4-6 mark landed it in eighth place while Brown and Yale are tied at the top at the end of the opening day with a 8-1 record. Skippers Caroline Benson, Mia Hanes and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan along with crews Lydia Brown, Abigail Borggaard, Cam Farrah, Gillian Perrell, Essie Clifton, Lucy Spearman, Andrea Riefkohl Gonzalez and Annie Richard led the performance on the water for Tulane.
"Tomorrow we'll finish out our final race of the round robin and hold our heads high as we prepare for the rest of the championships we host at home next month," Higgins said.
The Green Wave will return to the waters of the Providence River tomorrow for the final day of racing. Teams will report at 8:30 a.m. CT Sunday to prepare for the final day of competition.
