Jun 14, 2022 | General
Men’s tennis garners rate of 1,000 for the 11th-straight year
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University had five athletic programs earn perfect multi-year APR (Academic Progress Rates) scores, the NCAA announced Tuesday afternoon. Also, thirteen (13) programs either improved or equaled their multi-year APR score from two years ago (the NCAA did not publicly disclose APRs following the 2020-21 scholastic year), including men's tennis, which recorded a perfect rate of 1,000 for the 11th consecutive season.
The other Green Wave programs with perfect multi-year rates were men's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf and women's tennis.
According to the APR, Tulane had seven athletic programs lead or tie for the American Athletic Conference lead in men's cross country, men's tennis, men's track and field, women's basketball, women's golf, women's swimming and diving and women's tennis.
Additionally, beach volleyball set a program record for its best number (995) since APR became a metric for Division I academic performance in 2003.
"We will always prioritize success in the classroom at Tulane," said Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair Troy Dannen. "Our commitment to excellence in that regard will always be paramount. Our coaches and staff deserve all of the credit for supporting our student athletes in this endeavor."
Twelve (12) programs have a multi-year APR average higher than the national mark of 984. Those scores cover the academic years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21.
"I am extremely proud of our student athletes and today's numbers are a direct reflection of the emphasis they place on academic success," Deputy AD, Student Services/SWA Dr. Charvi Greer said. "Finding balance in college is essential and our student athletes handle that masterfully."
The NCAA Division I academic progress rates system was implemented as part of "an ambitious academic reform effort," according to the NCAA's website. The APR holds institutions accountable for academic progress of student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
