NEW ORLEANS – Amanda Caldwell has been named head coach of Tulane's Swimming and Diving program, Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair Troy Dannen announced Monday.
Caldwell comes to Uptown after four years as the head coach at Georgia Southern.
Last season, the Eagles boasted their first individual conference champion (200 IM) in the past 10 years and qualified their most student athletes for the National Invitational Championship (NIC) meet. Georgia Southern was also the top-ranked Division I swimming and diving program in community outreach, as ranked by Helper Helper.
In her third season with the Eagles, Caldwell helped guide the Georgia Southern to a sixth-place finish in the CCSA Championships and posted six different school records. Annamaria Hornyak dominated the 2020-21 season under coach Caldwell, earning CCS Freshman Swimmer of the Year. Hornyak also won multiple Swimmer of the Week awards, while her and Katie Knight swept the final week of voting.
In her second season as the head coach at Georgia Southern, Caldwell had 12 personal records broken in the final day of the CCSA Championships. Caldwell has had multiple conference swimmers and divers of the week, as well as seeing Elizabeth Chemey earn Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors.
In 2019, the Eagles finished fourth in the CCSA Championships hosted in Lynchburg, Va. Anna Moers advanced from the CCSA Championship and earned an invite to the CSCAA National Invitational, racing in four events over a three-day period. Moers advanced to one final heat and earned 13 points for the Eagles during those events.
Prior to her stint at Georgia Southern was a six-year run as an assistant coach at Rice University.
During her time at Rice, the Owls captured two Conference USA titles, as well as the 2014 CSCAA (Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America) Invitational Championships. Individually, Rice swimmers captured 28 C-USA meet titles in six seasons and the school qualified swimmers for seven different NCAA Championship events in those seasons.
Caldwell was also the recipient of the prestigious Jean Freeman Scholarship from the CSCAA in 2018, given annually to assistant coaches whose exceptional contributions have brought recognition to their college or university.
Prior to joining Rice, Caldwell served as a volunteer assistant coach at Georgia Tech for one season, while also coaching for the Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta. A four-year letterwinner at Youngstown State, Caldwell received her bachelor's degree in 2006 and was recently named a Bitonte College of Health and Human Services Distinguished Alumni. She earned her master's degree from James Madison University in 2008.
"Tulane Athletics is extremely happy that Amanda and her family are joining ours," said Dannen. "She not only brings a proven track record of success, the core values she helps instill in student athletes are also a good fit for our culture. We look forward to the energy and vison she will bring to Uptown."
A native of Martins Ferry, Ohio, Caldwell is a 2001 graduate of Martins Ferry High School. She is a certified member of the American Swim Coaches Association (Level II) and a member of United States Swimming.
"I can't thank Troy, Deputy ADs Dr. Charvi Greer and Jana Woodson and Associate AD Amanda Robinson enough for giving me this fantastic opportunity," said Caldwell. "The school, its resources and its community is everything a coach could ask for to earn success and provide the best experience for the student athletes. Go Wave!"
Caldwell and her husband Beau have one daughter, Ella.
