New Orleans – The No. 17 ranked Tulane University bowling team restarts the 2022-23 season with a trip to the Stormin' Blue and White Classic from Sunday – Tuesday at South Point Las Vegas. The action starts at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday and then 11:55 a.m. on Monday. The Tuesday start time is at 10 a.m. The tournament is hosted by Mount St. Mary's (Maryland).
The Green Wave are one of 14 teams that are invited to participate in the tournament along with Nebraska, Texas Southern, McKendree College, Maryville, Newman, Stephen F. Austin, Maryland Eastern Shore, Mount St. Mary's, Louisiana Tech, Daemen, Vanderbilt, Prairie View A&M and Spalding
Â
The competitive field includes 12 schools that are ranked or receiving votes in the top 25 including five teams placed in the top 10 programs nationally.
The first day of competition this weekend, Jan. 8, will be five (5) five-game baker matches with total pins being the goal. In the qualifying rounds, teams will alternate lanes after each baker game until the match is complete. Tulane squares off with No. 11 nationally ranked Maryville in lanes 39-40 in the first match, Texas Southern in lanes 37-38 in the second match, No. 9 nationally ranked Louisiana Tech in lanes 53-54 the third match, No. 4 nationally ranked Nebraska in lanes 41-42 the fourth match and Spalding in lanes 51-52 in the fifth match.
The second day of the tournament, Jan. 9, is a format of five (5) traditional team games. The program takes on No. 10 nationally ranked Maryland Eastern Shore in the sixth match, No. 3 nationally ranked Vanderbilt in the seventh match, No. 15 nationally ranked Mount St. Mary's in the eighth match, No. 5 nationally ranked Stephen F. Austin in the ninth match and receiving votes Daemen in the 10th match.
On the third day, Jan. 10, teams will complete in three rounds of match play in a playoff bracket. Each of the rounds in match play will be a best-of-seven baker match.
The playoff rounds will be seeded using overall total pin fall standings after the qualifying round (day one) is completed. The higher seed has the choice of starting lane for the first baker game with one exception. The exception is if the match goes to a single deciding baker game, the higher seed has the choice.
The first, second and third place teams will be awarded the team awards.
Individual awards will consist of an MVP and the All-Tournament Team which will be based on an average for a minimum of four of the five Traditional Team Games. There will be two All-Tournament teams, ten players total with the tournament MVP also being assigned to the First All-Tournament Team.
This year's Tulane bowling roster features five returners in sophomore Katharina Mente, senior Jenica Baron, junior Morgan Gitlitz, senior Amelia Vasquez and junior Yarelis Alvarez. Joining the program are three newcomers in freshman Cassidy Williams, sophomore Sofiia Druchyna and freshman Mia Stolakis.
Last time out at the Hawk Classic on Nov. 20 the program finished 11th among a strong field with 12,049 total pins. The team put up an overall record of 8-5 over the three days of competition. Gitlitz led the team with 1,030 total pins and her average of 206. She placed third overall to earn All-Tournament honors at the Hawk Classic.
