
Tulane Falls to Memphis in Four Sets

MEMPHIS, TN- The Green Wave volleyball team (4-14) traveled to Memphis to take on the Tigers (6-13) on Sunday afternoon. Tulane was defeated 3-1.Â
The Green Wave was led offensively by freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks. Burks finished the match with 15 kills and a .279 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore middle hitter, Ilayda Demirtas was second on the team in kills finishing with 11.Â
Right side hitter, Kathrine Crosley and middle blocker Sabrina Skyers led the team in blocks finishing the match with three assisted blocks a piece. Sophomore defensive specialist Mackenzie Mahr had a career-high match finishing with 13 digs. Â
The first set brought a back-and-forth battle between the Tigers and the Green Wave. Memphis went up to a quick 2-0 start but the Green Wave remained on their heels until the score was 8-8. Memphis ended up going on a 3-0 run and led for the remainder of the set. The Tigers claimed the first set 25-21.
In the second set, Tulane and Memphis started the way they did in the first. The teams took turns trading the lead until the score was tied at 6-6. The Green Wave pulled ahead and led by 3 or less until the Tigers were able to tie the score at 17-17. Tulane scored the next few points but Memphis did not give up and tied the set 19-19. Memphis ended up pulling away and winning the second set, 25-21.
The third set was dominated by the Green Wave from start to finish. After tying the Tigers 1-1, the Green Wave scored four straight points and led for the entirety of the set with the largest lead being 11 points. Tulane claimed the third set, 25-14.Â
For the majority of the fourth set, the Green Wave and the Tigers took turns trading the lead as it consisted of 12 different ties. Memphis came to match point at 24-23 but thanks to a kill from Burks, the match did not yet end. After much back and forth, the Tigers ended up claiming the elongated set, 28-26.Â
The Green Wave will return home for the first time in two weeks to host AAC West rival, Wichita State. Tickets for the matches can be purchased on TulaneTix.com.Â
