
Green Wave Bested by Rice, 3-1

HOUSTON, TX- On Saturday afternoon, the Green Wave volleyball team (6-19) fell to AAC West rival, Rice (17-7), 3-1.Â
Tulane was led offensively, once again, by freshman outside hitter Avery Burks. Burks finished the match with 15 kills and 17 total points. Middle blocker Jordan White had six kills in the match which tied the freshman's career high.Â
The Green Wave defense finished the match with seven total blocks. Libero Lauryn Burrows led the team in digs finishing with 15.Â
The first portion of the first set was a tight battle that consisted of four ties until the score was 5-5. Rice ended up scoring three back-to-back points to take the largest lead of the match. The Owls took that momentum and ran with it. The Green Wave trailed by three or more for the remainder of the set and fell to Rice, 27-25.
In the second set, Rice started off with an early lead. Tulane was able to come back and tie the score 5-5. However, the Owls scored four unanswered points, took the lead, and kept it for the remainder of the set with the smallest deficit being three points. Tulane dropped the second set, 25-16.Â
The Green Wave came out in the third set firing. Tulane started by scoring five unanswered points to go up 5-0 and kept its momentum for the entire set. The team had a combined .312 hitting percentage in the set and five different Green Wave attackers recorded kills. Burks finished the set with eight kills. Tulane defeated Rice in a dominant fashion, 25-13.Â
The fourth set mirrored, more closely, the first two. Rice went up 4-1, but Tulane was able to come back and tie the score. The Green Wave and the Owls were back and forth until the score was 10-10. Rice then scored four back-to-back, unanswered points and took the momentum of the set. The Green Wave trailed for the remainder and fell to Rice, 25-18. Â
Tulane will return home on Friday to host the number one team in the AAC, SMU, on Friday night. Tickets for the match can be purchased on TulaneTix.com.
