
Women’s Indoor Track & Field Ranked Regionally for the Sixth Straight Week and Moves Up 29 Spots Nationally

NEW ORLEANS – Following a fourth place showing at the AAC Indoor Championships last weekend, the Tulane women's indoor track & field program moved up and is now ranked No. 10 in the South Central Region by the USTFCCCA, the organization announced this week. The program also made a 29-spot jump in the nationally rankings and is placed No. 72 in the country following conference championship week.
Tulane received a total of 66.64 points in the regional poll. The Green Wave are one of 11 women's teams from the state of Louisiana that are ranked regionally. Among the 11, only LSU (No. 4) has a higher regional ranking than Tulane. The Green Wave are also one of three from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) that are ranked regionally in the South Central Regional along with Houston (No. 8) and SMU (No. 13). The Green Wave were ranked No. 11 last week.
In the national poll, Tulane moved up 29 spots from last week's rankings. The program is ranked No. 72 nationally. The jump in national rankings is the fifth-most in the country only behind 61 spots from UMass Lowell, 43 spots from Vanderbilt, 41 spots from Penn and 31 spot from Coastal Carolina.
The fourth place finish at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships is the highest-ever finish for the program in the AAC, a jump of four spots from the 2022 finish and the highest team placing for the program since 1999 when Tulane was a still a member of Conference USA. Over the course of both days of the championships, Tulane accumulated two event wins in the finals and four top-three medal finishes.
The women's team has five athletes that are ranked among the top 10 in the South Central Region in Mackenzie Callahan – 7th – mile, the 4x400m Relay Team – 9th, Kara Steele – 4th – triple jump, Kristen O'Handley – 3rd – pentathlon and Margot Temines – 9th – pentathlon.
The women's program also has 12 athletes that are ranked among the top 10 in the AAC in an event in, Victoria Robinson – 2nd – 800m, Janae Dean – 5th – 800m, Mackenzie Callahan – 2nd – mile, 4x400m relay – 5th, distance medley relay – 5th, Kristen O'Handley – 10th – high jump, Alexandra Potts – 6th – pole vault, Kara Steele – 1st – triple jump, Maren Butler – 4th – shot put, Kristen O'Handley – 1st – pentathlon, Margot Temines – 3rd – pentathlon and Laura Fodor – 8th – pentathlon.
The polls were voted on by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences around the country.
Next, the program will send Kristen O'Handley to participate in the pentathlon at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 10. O'Handley will start competing on the first day at 9:20 a.m. with the 60m hurdles. The rest of the Tulane team is scheduled to start outdoor season on March 17-18 at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette.
