STARKVILLE, MS – The Tulane men's tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of the host Bulldogs of Mississippi State Friday at Rula Tennis Pavilion in Starkville.
Luka Petrovic and Luc Hoeijmans picked up a 6-4 Tulane win at No. 3 doubles and the tandem of Charlie Barry and Benji Jacobson nearly gave the visitors the point, but ultimately suffered a 7-5 setback in the tiebreak against 42nd-ranked Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic.
Tulane split the singles matches with MSU, collecting victories at No. 3 (Billy Suarez: 3-6, 6-3, 6-2), No. 5 (Rafael de Alba: 7-5, 6-4) and No. 6 (Sam Scherer: 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2).
"This was a hard-fought match from beginning to end," said Green Wave head coach Mark Booras. "There were lots of ups and downs and momentum switches on both ends, making for a great college match. We had some chances and doubles didn't get it done, but responded well in singles and gave ourselves four opportunities to be successful. Unfortunately, we just came up a touch short today.
"We saw a lot of good things out of our boys and some things that we need to clean up. We have a quick turnaround and will work out some things in practice tomorrow and get ready for another tough battle on Sunday."
Tulane will play Ole Miss Sunday at 1 in Oxford. The Rebels are 3-2 this season after falling 6-1 to 19th-ranked Columbia on Friday.
