Ole Miss Uses Strong Singles Effort to Defeat Wave
Feb 5, 2023 | Men's Tennis
OXFORD, MS – The Tulane men's tennis team got on the proverbial scoreboard first in doubles, but Ole Miss staged a comeback in singles to successfully defend its home court with a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon at the Galtney Tennis Center.
Ole Miss improved to 4-2 with the win, while Tulane fell to 1-2.
The Green Wave's Fynn Kuenkler and Sam Scherer picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles and Luka Petrovic and Billy Suarez followed suit with a 7-5 win at No. 3
Alex Bancila did pick up a singles win for the Olive and Blue, knocking off the Rebels' Lukas Engelhardt 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 4.
"We had another nailbiter today which, unfortunately, did not go our way," said Tulane head coach Mark Booras. We started off really well in doubles, responded effectively to the momentum switches and then clinched the doubles point on the road in front of a loud crowd.
"We carried that momentum into singles and had a great start on a bunch of courts, but then took our foot off the gas on a few spots and let Ole Miss back into it. It was enough to turn the momentum of the match, and then we found ourselves go from a place of being in total control to fighting to stay in the match. These are mistakes you cannot afford to make when you are battling toe to toe with a tough competitor."
The Green Wave is back in action at LSU on Saturday at 1.
