Tulane Upsets #19 South Carolina to Finish Undefeated Weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tulane University Beach Volleyball picked up another upset victory defeating No. 19 South Carolina 3-2 on Saturday to complete an undefeated weekend at the Carolina Challenge. The Green Wave finished the weekend 4-0 extending its win streak to 10 including the upset of No. 12 Stetson on Friday.

The Green Wave took an early 2-0 lead over South Carolina behind wins from positions four and five. Lara Torruella and Savka Popovic teamed up to pick up the first win in two sets in position five to put the Wave up 1-0. A hard-fought three-set victory from Ashton Mares and Abby Jackson followed from position four as Tulane took early control of the match. After the Gamecocks responded with wins from positions one and two to tie it up, Samantha Mehlman and Emily Heintzelman delivered the Green Wave its second ranked victory of the weekend by winning in two sets in position three. Mehlman and Heintzelman combined for 24 kills, 22 digs, and seven blocks in their win.

Up next, Tulane will compete in the March to May in Gulf Shores, Alabama, March 17-19.
