Theis Puts Sunday Win on Ice with Match-Clincher

NEW ORLEANS – Brooke Theis knocked off Wichita State's Harriet Hamilton 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to lift the Tulane women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over the 62nd-ranked Shockers on Sunday at City Park Tennis Center.

The victory vaulted the home team to 6-8 overall this season, while WSU dropped to 7-8.

The visitors took the doubles point, but Tulane did get a 7-5 win at No. 3 by Kristen Borland and Theis.

In singles, Charlotte Russell put the Green Wave on the board first with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 and Adelaide Lavery followed with an equally dominant 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3. Jiayun Zhu then recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 before Theis dealt the Shockers the clinching salvo.

Borland added one more for good measure with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 2.

The triumph was the program's second win over a ranked opponent this season after a 4-0 win at #69 North Texas on March 10.

The Green Wave is back home for weekend matches on Friday against VCU (2 p.m.) and on Sunday against Tulsa (1 p.m.). The match against the Golden Hurricane will serve as Lavery's Senior Day.
