Green Wave Defeats Mustangs, 4-2
Apr 1, 2023 | Men's Tennis
TAMPA, FL – The Tulane men's tennis team got a three-set clinching victory by Luc Hoeijmans at No. 4 singles to secure a 4-2 win over #50 SMU Saturday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa.
The 43rd-ranked Green Wave improved its record to 12-8 overall, while the Mustangs dropped to 11-11.
Hoeijmans won 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 to give Tulane its fourth point.
Also earning singles victories were Alex Bancila at No. 5 (6-4, 6-1) and Rafael de Alba at No. 6 (2-6, 6-1, 6-0).
The Green Wave needed just three singles points after winning the doubles point. Billy Suarez and Benji Jacobson won 6-3 at No. 2 and Fynn Kuenkler and Hoeijmans posted a 6-3 victory at No. 3. Of note, Tulane's No. 1 tandem of Luka Petrovic and Sam Scherer led SMU's Adam Neff and Pranav Kumar 5-4 when the point was clinched. Neff and Kumar came into the weekend ranked 69th nationally in doubles.
"This is a great win for our team today over a very strong SMU program," said Green Wave head coach Mark Booras. "I love how we responded after two very tough weekends on the road. The guys took a lot of things to heart that we've been talking about in doubles and it allowed us to put our stamp on the doubles point to get an early lead. Then SMU responded quickly and started to put an absolute beatdown on us in singles and we were down five first sets in no time.
"Our guys kept their heads and started chipping away at some of the leads and responded well to put us back in the battle and, eventually, to close them out."
The Olive and Blue is back in action Monday at 12:30 p.m. CT against 53rd-ranked USF.
