Apr 1, 2023 | Women's Beach Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Tulane University Beach Volleyball posted a 1-1 mark on the first day of the Mustang Invitational on Saturday to move to 14-6 on the season. The Green Wave earned its third victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 13 Washington 3-2 in its first match before falling to the tournament host Cal Poly 2-3 to end the evening.
Â
The 20th-ranked Green Wave squared off with the Huskies for a ranked dual in its first match of the weekend. Tulane fell behind early as UW took the first point on court two, but the duo of Lara Torruella and Savka Popovic responded quickly in position five for the Wave to tie it up 1-1 winning in straight sets 21-10, 21-18. Washington reclaimed the lead with a win from position three before Tulane evened the score again with a three-set win by Ashton Mares and Abby Jackson on court four. The match came down to a third and final set on court one between Mollie Ebertin and Kendall Peters for Tulane and Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen for the Huskies on court one. Ebertin and Peters stepped up to the challenge for the Wave, clinching the 3-2 victory by taking the third set 18-16. Â
Â
In its second match of the day, Tulane claimed the early advantage against the Mustang Invitational host Cal Poly. Mares and Jackson put the Wave on the board first with a two-set win on court four 21-12, 21-12. Cal Poly got the next point on court three to even the score, but Torruella and Popovic battled in position five for a two-set win to put Tulane back in front. Unfortunately, the Green Wave was unable to close out the match as hard-fought three-set matches on courts one and two both fell to the Mustangs.
Â
On Sunday, Tulane will play two more dual matches in the Mustang Invitational. The Wave will face No. 9 Cal at 1:15 p.m. CT and UC Davis at 3:45 p.m. CT.
