Tigers Take 4-0 Senior Day Match over Tulane
Apr 15, 2023 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The visiting Memphis Tigers navigated inclement NOLA weather, and a venue change, to defeat host Tulane 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside.
The contest, which was originally scheduled for City Park Tennis Center, was shifted to the Hilton after lightning in the surrounding area.
37th-ranked Memphis improved to 12-6 overall, while 41st-ranked Tulane dropped to 13-11.
The two teams split the top two doubles matches, with Billy Suarez and Benji Jacobson grabbing a 6-4 win at No. 2. However, the Tigers locked up the point when Pablo Alemany and Oscar Cutting took down a 6-4 win of their own at No. 3.
Memphis swept the top three singles matches to wrap up the win, clinching the triumph with Conor Gannon's 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 comeback at No. 3. For Tulane, Luc Hoeijmans surrendered the first set at No. 4 but came back and won the second and was up 3-2 in the third set when play was halted. Alex Bancila also led 3-0 at No. 5 after losing the first set and Rafael de Alba was ahead 5-4 in the first set at No. 6.
The Green Wave celebrated the careers of seniors Jacobson and Charlie Barry in a short ceremony before the match.
Tulane will learn its first-round opponent in next week's American Athletic Conference Championship (Orlando, Florida) on Tuesday, while the action begins on Friday.
