Tulane Women’s Tennis Falls in First Round at AAC Championships

ORLANDO, Florida – Ninth-seeded Temple dropped the doubles point to eighth-seeded Tulane but came back with four singles victories to lock up a 4-2 win over the Green Wave in first-round action at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships. The tournament is being held this week at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando.

Kristen Borland and Brooke Theis got the Green Wave started with a quick 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles position. Later, Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell secured the point for the Olive and Blue with a convincing 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over the 19th-ranked Temple tandem of Jamie Wei and Maiko Uchijima.Â

In singles, Uchijima came through first with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. Sena Takebe then followed with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 and Veronika Kulhava made it 3-1 Temple with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4.

The next point went to Tulane as Jiayun Zhu got the Green Wave on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position.

The No. 1 contest proved to be the clincher when Thamara Kawartani scored a three-set comeback win at No. 1 by the score of 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

The Green Wave finished the season at 7-11 overall. Temple (17-4) will now face top-seeded SMU on Thursday in quarterfinal action.
