Bearcats Ride Second Inning Surge to 12-9 Win
Apr 21, 2023 | Baseball
Â
The Bearcats improved to 16-23 and 4-6 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Green Wave fell to 11-27 and 4-6 in the league.
Â
Chase Horst (2-3) got the win in relief, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts over two and one-third innings. Jackson Murphy got the final two outs of the game for his first save.
Â
Dylan Carmouche (3-6) suffered the defeat, allowing nine runs over five and one-third innings but just three were earned. He also gave up nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Â
For Cincinnati, third baseman Kameron Guidry drove in four runs in a 2-for-5 effort, while catcher Alex Jones went 3-for-5 and knocked in two. Left fielder Kerrington Cross and first baseman Ryan Nicholson each collected two hits and Cross added three runs scored. Center fielder Cole Harting and second baseman Lauden Brooks each scored twice.
Â
For Tulane, center fielder Teo Banks and catcher Brennan Lambert both had three-run homers and third baseman Simon Baumgardt added a two-run bomb in the fifth inning.
Â
With the early fireworks from Banks and Lambert, the Green Wave carried a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the second. However, the Bearcats used five hits and two Tulane errors in that half inning to claim a 7-6 advantage.
Â
UC's Cross had a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth but Baumgardt's bolt in the top of the fifth tied the affair at 8-all. However, Harting answered for the home team with a solo home run of his own in the bottom half to put Cincinnati back in front and the Bearcats tacked on three more tallies in the bottom of the eighth.Â
Â
Tulane pinch-hitter Brayden Morrow added an RBI double to center in the top of the ninth for the game's final margin. The Green Wave did get the tying run to the plate with one out but Murphy did his job to prevent further damage.
Â
Baumgardt's homer gave him nine for the season, the top mark on the team.Â
Â
The two teams will play the second game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
