Jun 21, 2023 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's bowling coach Hayley Veitch recently announced the addition of Kristen Derr and Linnea Holcomb to the 2023 signing class.
"Kristen and Linnea both bring different elements to the team, and I am excited to have both of them be part of our program for the upcoming year," said Coach Veitch. Â
Derr arrives at Tulane after playing the last three seasons at Adelphi University (N.Y). She graduated Cum Laude in the spring of 2023 with her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. As a member of the Panthers' squad in her senior season, she led the team with her 235 completed frames, 189.4 Baker average, 95 strikes and 97 spares. As a junior during the 2021-22 season, the Sunbury, Pennsylvania native was All-East Coast Conference (ECC), a member of the ECC All-Tournament Team, a National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Scholar-Athlete, selected to the ECC's Commissioner's Honor Roll and aided the team to a conference runner-up finish. She finished fourth in the ECC in spare-conversion rate (67.5) and single spare percentage (87.7) while tying for the team lead in a 191.3 Baker average. She was named All-Tournament at the Griffin Baker Classic and at the Northeast Roundup. She competed at Delaware State during the 2019-20 season where she had a 183 average in 12 events for the Hornets. All together she has made five All-Tournament teams during her collegiate career. In high school at Shikellamy among her accomplishments were being a two-time State Champion, a three-time Regional Champion, a three-time National Team Final Four finalist, a three-time Conference Player of the Year, twice she finished among the top-five at State Singles, she placed sixth at Nationals in 2018 and during her senior season she set the Pennsylvania State Record and led the nation in high average at 234.43. Her high game is 300 twice and she has a high series of 802. She aspires to join the PWBA and become a touring professional bowler. Her sister, Shelby, also was a collegiate bowler at St. Francis University (2012-16).
"Kristen brings four valuable years of maturity, leadership and experience with her," Coach Veitch explained. "It is always a great opportunity to have a student-athlete such as Kristen transfer to Tulane from another strong program to share their previous background and overall knowledge of collegiate bowling."
Holcomb will head to Uptown from Chicago, Illinois where she attended Lane Tech. She graduated in the spring of 2023 with a 5.3 weighted
grade-point average during her high school academic career. Her bowling achievements include placing second individually at the MLK Classic Tournament in each of the last two years with a six-game total of 1,072 as a junior and a 1,136 as a senior. She was also part of a team that were two-time Chicago City Champions. Her personal-high of 275 came during her senior night. In addition to bowling, Holcomb also was a varsity high school athlete at Lane Tech in the sports of basketball and softball. In the classroom, she was an Illinois State Scholar, an AP Scholar with distinction and a Lane Tech Scholar. She also completed the rigorous and prestigious Lane Tech Alpha Stem Program. As an incoming freshman at Tulane, her intended major is biomedical engineering.
"Although Linnea is relatively new to the sport of bowling, her work ethic and dedication on and off the lanes stood out to me right away," Coach Veitch stated. "Linnea is a hard worker, and I am looking forward to seeing her improve further in the years to come."
Â
Derr and Holcomb join the team's two 2022 fall signees, Juanelyz Solla and Emma Fetterman, along with expected returners Katharina Mente, Morgan Gitlitz, Yarelis Alvarez, Cassidy Williams, Sofiia Druchyna and Mia Stolakis to form the 2023-24 Tulane University Bowling roster.
Last month it was announced that the Tulane bowling program is changing leagues and will now be a member of Conference USA starting with the 2023-24 campaign.
During the 2022-23 season, Gitlitz led the team with 7,992 total pins. Amelia Vasquez had the highest average on the squad at 195.8, while Stolakis recorded the highest individual performance with her 266 against UMES (10/15). Tulane sported an overall 71-51 record this season.
