The Tulane University volleyball team is set to open the 2023 season home slate on Friday as they host Alabama, Sam Houston, and Alabama A&M at the Green Wave Classic.
Game Notes
At the Jaguar Classic
This past weekend, Tulane went 1-2 at the Jaguar Classic at South Alabama University. The Green Wave swept Jackson State, 3-0 but lost to Stephen F. Austin and South Alabama 3-1 and 3-0 respectively.
Freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks, was named to the Jaguar Classic All-Tournament team.
Statistical Leaders
Graduate middle blocker, Orsula Staka, leads the AAC in average blocks per set (1.9).
Burks led the Green Wave in kills (33) and aces (4) and is second on the team in digs (44). She is eighth in the AAC for kills per set (3.30) and 9th for digs per set (4.40). She is also fourth in the AAC for total points per set (4.15).
Graduate libero, Lauryn Burrows, is sixth in the AAC in average digs per set (4.60). Junior setter, Laura Fiabane is fifth in the AAC in average assists per set (7.80). This Weekend's Matchups
Match Ups
Alabama went 3-0 at home last weekend. The Crimson Tide swept Mississippi Valley State, Mercer, and St. Louis. The Green Wave has not played Alabama since 2004 and has one win in five tries.
Sam Houston comes into the tournament with a 2-2 record. It started the season strong with a 3-1 win over Nicholls and Oral Roberts. The Bearkats ended up dropping the match against Portland State in five sets (2-3). They were also bested by Texas A&M Corpus Christi (1-3).
Alabama A&M went 1-2 to start off its season. It was bested by UNC Asheville (3-0) and University of Maryland Eastern Shore (3-1). It earned a victory against North Carolina Central University (3-2). The Green Wave is 1-0 against the Bulldogs.
