NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University cross country program will look to continue its strong start to the season as it hits the road to compete in the Southern Showcase on Friday.
"Our squads are excited to get back out on the course and compete among a large high-level field at the Southern Showcase," director of cross country/track and field Adrian Myers said. "This weekend we expect to see a strong early season effort against some national class teams."
The meet, hosted by Jacksonville State, will be held at the John Hunt Cross Country Park in Huntsville, Alabama. The men will open the races running an 8k beginning at 7:30 a.m. followed by a 5k for the women set to start at 8:30 a.m.
"Our men's team is rounding into form though we will not be competing with our 'A' squad this weekend," Myers said. "We are setting up some strong performances down the road to including Notre Dame in a couple weeks. They've looked great in training and see bright things ahead."
"The women will run our full squad this weekend coming off some difficult training sessions with high expectations," Myers stated. "This group has some respect to earn within the league and region over the coming month. This group will be a problem when we get it all aligned."
Forty-one teams, including the Green Wave, will be represented in the women's 5k and Tulane will be among 37 teams competing in the men's 8k.
In each the men's and women's fields eight teams, including Tulane, enter the meet ranked in their region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Featured among those ranked teams are four squads from the Southeastern Conference: Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and nationally ranked Alabama (#13 women's & #23 men's). The Wave will also race against one of the nation's top Division II programs, Lee College, which ranks eighth on the men's side and 12th on the women's side.
"We've been stacking some great training blocks and look forward to the outcomes this work brings over the months ahead," Myers said. "We know that our men and women will be positioned for success when October and November roll around."
Up next, the Green Wave will travel to South Bend, Indiana, to race in the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Friday, September 29.
