Football Earns 21-3 Road Victory Over Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, MS – The Tulane football team (2-1) earned a hard-fought 21-3 road victory over Southern Miss (1-2) on Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. in the Battle of the Bell. It was Tulane's sixth-straight road victory dating back to the 2022 season.
Kai Horton, making his second straight start at quarterback, went 12-for-19 for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Makhi Hughes led the squad in rushing with 14 carries for 83 yards. Shaadie Clayton-Johnson picked up 66 yards rushing and 21 yards receiving. Lawrence Keys III led the team with his four catches for 78 yards. Chris Brazzell II hauled in three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. Jha'Quan Jackson grabbed a pair of passes for 41 yards and a 35-yard touchdown.
Jesus Machado led the defense with his seven stops. Bailey Despanie recorded five tackles including a pair for loss. Tyler Grubbs totaled five tackles and a stop for loss. Lance Robinson had five tackles and pass breakup. Jarius Monroe had five tackles, 1.5 stops for loss and two pass breakups. Darius Hodges had three tackles including a sack. Keith Cooper Jr. totaled three tackles, a sack and two stops for loss. Both of Patrick Jenkins tackles were for loss. Angelo Anderson also had a stop for loss.
The Tulane defense was able to limit the Southern Miss to a total of 213 yards including only 36 on the ground. The Green Wave offense tallied 314 yards with 186 coming through the air and 128 on the ground. The team was also able to pick up 19 first downs.
Tulane scored first as Horton rushed it in from a yard out to complete a seven play, 75-yard drive and put the Green Wave up 7-0 at the 12:16 mark of the opening quarter. The big play on the drive was a Horton to Keys 29-yard pitch-and-catch. That would end up being the only score for either team in the first 30 minutes of action as went into the break with Tulane leading by a touchdown.
After a stop on defense to start the half, the Tulane offense scored its second touchdown of the game as Horton connected with Jackson on a 35-yard touchdown to put the Green Wave up 14-0 at the 10:21 mark of the third quarter.
Southern Miss scored the program's only points of the game on a made field goal from Andrew Stein at the 5:48 mark of the third quarter.
The Tulane offense scored its third touchdown of the game as Brazzell hauled in a three-yard toss from Horton to put the Green Wave up 21-3 with 2:03 remaining in the third quarter.
Next the Tulane football team returns home to host Nicholls at Yulman Stadium at 6 p.m. with the game also being shown live on ESPN+.
