
Tulane Falls to Sam Houston in a Close Four-Set Match

NEW ORLEANS- Despite a late fourth-set comeback, the Tulane Green Wave volleyball team was bested by Sam Houston in four close sets (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-27) on the second day of the Green Wave Classic.ย

The Green Wave was led offensively again by freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks. Burks had another career high match with 18 total kills. Graduate middle blocker, Orsula Staka, had a season high match with 12 kills.ย

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter, Ilayda Demirtas led the defensive front with six assisted blocks. Graduate libero, Lauryn Burrows, also broke a season record. She finished the match with 21 digs.ย

The Green Wave won a nail-biting first set that featured 16 different ties. Graduate outside hitter, Amarachi Osuji led the the set offensively with five kills. Tulane was able to secure the match point victory off a block from Osuji and freshman middle blocker Jordan White.ย

Sam Houston evened the match 1-1 in another close set. Tulane tied the score 5-5 but trailed for the remainder of the set. Despite going on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two 23-21, the Bearkats took the set 25-22.ย

In the third set, the Green Wave jumped out to an early 11-6 lead. However, Sam Houston came back firing and ended up tying Tulane 12-12. For the remainder of the match, the Green Wave trailed and lost the set 25-20.ย

Sam Houston led for a large majority of the fourth set, but the Green Wave was an arm's length away. After going on a 5-0 run, Tulane was able to tie the match at 19-19. After a lot of back and forth, the set was again tied at 25-25. The Bearkats ended up securing the victory off of two Tulane ball handling errors.

The Green Wave will be back in action tomorrow on the final day of the Green Wave Classic. They take on Alabama A&M at 3:00 PM.ย
