Bowling Announces Hiring of Norm Spurlock
Sep 29, 2023 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University bowling program and head coach Hayley Veitch announced the hiring of Norm Spurlock as the program's assistant coach.
Coach Spurlock is a familiar face to Tulane's bowling fans as he has served as the team's volunteer assistant coach and ball driller for the last three seasons.
"Norm is a great full-time addition to the team as he has demonstrated nothing but loyalty and commitment since joining the program as a volunteer coach in 2020," Coach Veitch explained. "His knowledge and background in the pro shop world of bowling along with his mentoring attitude will help the team to the next level. He is extremely dedicated to achieving success and this is evident from the progress he has made with his pro shop over the past few years. The team is lucky to have Norm onboard and we welcome him to the Green Wave family".
Coach Spurlock is originally from Oceanport, New Jersey and graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) where he retired after serving 24 years as an officer in the US Army. Among his assignments were two tours of Europe, three years working on a Search and Rescue Project, three years working on the Space Program before he concluded his military career with a final assignment here in New Orleans (Belle Chase).
He started bowling in the junior program at the age of eight. He competed at the high school, college, and professional levels. Coach Spurlock has achieved numerous bowling high score honors (300 games and 800 series) and has maintained a +220 average over the last 10 years. He has been on staff with Radical Bowling Technologies (one of the seven brands of Brunswick) for the last four years.
Coach Spurlock owns and has operated Nola Norm's Pro Shop in Kenner, Louisiana since 2018.
The Tulane bowling program starts the 2023-24 season next weekend as the program heads to the SWIBC in Fort Worth, Texas from Oct. 7-8 at City View Lanes. The following weekend the program heads back home to host the annual Colonial Lanes Classic in Harahan from Oct. 13-15. The program finished sixth of 15 teams last season in an extremely competitive and highly ranked field.
For the completed 2022-23 season, Morgan Gitlitz led the team with 7,992 total pins. Amelia Vasquez had the highest average on the squad at 195.8, while Mia Stolakis recorded the highest individual performance with her 266 against UMES (10/15). Tulane sported an overall 71-51 record on the campaign. The program also finished the season ranked No. 22 nationally.
The 2023-24 roster includes returners Morgan Gitlitz, Yarelis Alvarez, Sofiia Druchyna, Katharina Mente, Mia Stolakis, Cassidy Williams plus newcomers Juanelyz Solla, Emma Fetterman, Kristen Derr and Linnea Holcomb.
