Swimming & Diving Sending Five to the CSCAA National Open Water Championships

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane swimming & diving team will be represented by five qualifiers at the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Open Water Championships on Dec. 15 in Miami, Florida at FIU Biscayne Bay in a meet hosted by Florida International University starting at 9 a.m. (CT).
The live stats for the meet can be followed on Meet Mobile, which is a subscription phone-only live stat app. The CSCAA will also have results posted on their website
Tulane is sending qualifiers Sydney Mullin, Lise Coetzee, Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou, Phoebe Johnson and Layla Allen to the meet.
The meet is a 500 free swim. Individual championships will be crowned. Also, the event will recognize individual champions in each division and awards will be given to the 1st – 8th finisher in each event. The women's 5K begins at 9 a.m. (CT) and follows the men's race in the event to start the day. The total entries are limited to 175 per gender. USA Swimming has designated the event as an approved qualifying event. The top-five finishers for each gender earn invites to the USA Swimming 5K Open Water Championships.
In the team's last meet, the US Open Championships from Dec. 4-7 in Greensboro, N.C., the team sent four student-athletes to compete in three events. Coetzee finished third in the 500 free B final with a 4:54.89. Petropoulou took fifth in the 500 free B final (4:56.42) and also earned fifth in the 200 fly (2:00.14) while Paula Gaya Bisquerra swam a 1:03.81 in the 100 breast.
Head Coach Amanda Caldwell is in her third year leading the program. The team is coming off an outstanding 2023-24 season that resulted in 64 lifetime bests, 31 all-time top-10 school marks, four school records, an AAC individual title, an AAC Freshman of the Year Award, 11 National Invite Championship Qualifiers, a Zone Diver Qualifier and an NCAA qualifier.
The program returns 12 swimmers & divers from last season in Anna Behrman, Emma Brady, Rachel Casebolt, Taylor Cekay, Reese Dunkenberger, Paula Gaya Bisquerra, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Paige McKenzie Sydney Mullin, Gwen Shahboz, Ece Tanriverdi and Andrea Zeebe. The squad also is welcoming in 11 newcomers in Layla Allen, Lise Coetzee, Charley Floyd, Phoebe Johnson, Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou, Catherine Russo, Eva Shawver, Rafaela Sumida, Lily Von Herbulis, Kelsey Weddington and Maya Wilson.
Following this week's competition in Miami, Florida, Tulane will next compete in the Eagle Holiday Splash on December 19 in Fort Myers, Florida. Tulane will next be at home on Jan. 25, 2025 for a dual meet against Little Rock. The team wraps up the home schedule and regular season by hosting West Florida on Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. The 2025 AAC Swimming Championship will be held from Feb. 19-22 in Dallas, Texas at SMU.
