New Orleans - The Tulane baseball team (24-17, 8-7 AAC) plays the second game of the two-game non-conference series against No. 22 Southern Miss (27-13) on Tuesday, April 22, at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. at 6 p.m.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH/Varsity Network. Airtime for radio is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Pitching Matchups
Tulane is expected to start RHP Michel Lombardi on Tuesday in what will be a bullpen day. Lombardi is 3-0 on the year with a 1.59 ERA in 17 games pitched and two starts. He leads the AAC in saves with nine and has struck out 45 in 22.2 innings worked on the campaign.
Southern Miss is expected to start RHP Ty Long. Long is 1-0 on the campaign with three strikeouts in five innings worked. This will be his fifth game on the mound and second start.
Scouting Southern Miss
Southern Miss (27-13, 12-6 Sun Belt) are currently ranked among the top 25 programs in the country in three polls. The program checks in at No. 22 in D1 Baseball, No. 24 in the Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the NCBWA. USM has won three of the last four games after earning a series victory over Georgia State over the weekend.
Jake Cook is leading the attack with his .354 batting average. He also has 51 hits, nine doubles and a slugging percentage of .444. Nick Moniestere sports a .335 batting average with 36 runs, 53 hits, eight doubles, 14 home runs, 49 RBIs, 105 bases and a .665 slugging percentage. Carson Paetow is tied for the team lead with 14 home runs and is placed second with 42 RBIs. Matthew Russo has 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. JB Middleton leads the club with his 7-1 record to go along with 74 strikeouts in 61.1 innings worked. Landen Payne has been the top reliever with 28 strikeouts in 16.1 innings worked and a 3.31 ERA
Christian Ostrander is in his second year in charge of the program and is 70-33 since he took over.
Series History
Tulane leads the all-time series with Southern Miss 100-68-1 since the first meeting in 1949. The last meeting saw USM come up with a 13-6 win in Hattiesburg earlier this month, April 1, after scoring eight runs in the opening frame. Southern Miss has won the last seven contests against the Green Wave.
Against the Sun Belt Conference
The road game Southern Miss will be the second for the program against a Sun Belt opponent this season with both being against the Golden Eagles. The program faced off with a pair of different Sun Belt opponents last season in losing a road series to Louisiana and suffering an 11-6 home loss to Southern Miss. The first meeting against a current Sun Belt Conference opponent came in 1946 with Tulane falling 7-1 to Louisiana. Overall, the Green Wave are 203-159 against current Sun Belt Conference opponents. Tulane gave up runs in every one of the first five innings including 11 runs in the second inning. The team walked 15 in the contest while also giving up 16 hits, 25 runs and hit four batters.
Will Clements started on the mound for Tulane and surrendered four runs on four walks in his inning plus. Blaise Wilcenski (3-3) was the first arm out of the bullpen. He only lasted 0.2 of an inning before surrendering four hits and six runs in taking the loss. Gavin Smith was the next call to the pen and allowed two runs on one hit and walk without being able to record an out. Michael Devenney was then inserted to try to stem the tide in the second and got the final out in the frame. He ended up allowing four runs in a full inning worked. Jacob Moore then entered and went 0.1 scoreless. Wes Burton walked four in his 0.1 of an inning in allowing four runs. Grayson Smith was the next man up for Tulane and threw 0.2 scoreless. Tanner Chun's home run in the third game, April 19, was his team leading seventh of the season. Hugh Pinkney extended his on-base streak to a season high 12 straight games in the loss in the rubber match. Connor Rasmussen picked up his 15th multi-hit contest of the season in the third game, April 19. Matthias Haas' four hits in the second game of the series on Friday, April 18, were a season-high and his most hits in a contest since getting five knocks against Southeastern Louisiana last season (4/30/24). He is the second player on Tulane to have four hits in a game this season along with James Agabedis III (4/5 vs. Rice). The save earned by Michael Lombardi in the middle game on Friday, April 18, was his ninth of the season and the 14th of his career to tie him with Zach Devito (2021-22) for seventh all-time at the school.
