
Baseball Loses Late 5-4 Heartbreaker to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Tulane baseball team (14-15, 2-4 American) dropped the squad's third consecutive road game to UAB (18-10, 4-2 American) by a 5-4 margin in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon, March 29, at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a two-run home run from Max Price. UAB started the inning with a walk. The home run went just above the glove of leaping centerfielder Tanner Chun to give the Blazers the victory and the sweep of the series.
Kaikea Harrison drove in the go-ahead run in the top half of the frame on a ball hit to the second base that saw pinch runner Evan Burg race around from second to score on the play.
Sam Larson (1-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering both runs in the ninth inning without being able to record an out. Blaise Wilcenski threw 3.2 scoreless inning in relief with two strikeouts. He retired 11 in a row in his outing. Jake Toporek started for the Green Wave. He went the first 2.2 innings with two runs allowed and four strikeouts. Beau Sampson had 1.2 inning of relief where he allowed one run and struck out two.
Tye Wood led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Trent Liolios had a hit and a run scored. Brett Rowell tallied a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Johnny Elliott had a hit and an RBI. Tanner Chun picked up a hit. Harrison recorded a pair of hits and then go-ahead RBI in the ninth.
The win was earned by UAB's Brendan Conner (3-1).
UAB, for the third straight game, scored first with two runs in the second inning on a Kevin Hall two-run single up the middle.
The Green Wave tied the game up at two with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Rowell and a sacrifice fly from Elliott.
Tulane took the team's second lead of the weekend in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Wood. It was Wood's second blast of the campaign.
UAB tied the game up with a solo home run by Alex Dupuy in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Next, Tulane returns home to take on Nicholls on Tuesday, March 31, at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
