NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball aims to extend its six-match win streak and build on its best start in American Conference play since joining the league in 2014 as it visits Memphis and hosts Wichita State this weekend. The Green Wave will take on the Tigers in Memphis, Tennessee, Friday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m. before returning to Uptown for its home-opener in league action against Wichita State on Sunday, October 4, at 1 p.m.
The Wave opened conference competition 2-0 last weekend on the road with victories at UTSA and at North Texas. Tulane outlasted the Roadrunners in the league opener to win 3-2 on Friday night in San Antonio before earning a 3-0 sweep of the Mean Green in Denton on Sunday. The 2-0 start to conference play is the best for the Green Wave since beginning the 2021 league campaign 2-0.
Senior Avery Burks garnered American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend in the Lone Star State. She hit an impressive .418 over the two conference wins averaging 4.19 points and 3.63 kills per set. Burks swung .485 with 18 kills in the five-set victory at UTSA before closing the week hitting .318 with 11 kills in the sweep at North Texas. Meanwhile, Riley Tucker earned weekly honorable mention from the league after averaging 1.75 blocks per set on the opening weekend of conference play.
Tulane Against the Tigers
The Green Wave enters the match at Memphis trailing the all-time series to the Tigers 28-34 including a 7-16 mark on the road. Tulane lost the only matchup between the two teams last season 1-3 in New Orleans on September 26. The last time the Wave played the Tigers in Memphis it came away with a 3-2 victory on October 18, 2024.
In the last win for Tulane over the Tigers the Green Wave pulled off the reverse sweep battling back to win three straight sets after dropping the first two in Memphis. Zoe Rachow led the Wave with 23 assists in the match while Sami Jacobs paced the team with 15 kills and Avery Burks added eight kills and eight digs.
Green Wave versus Mean Green
Tulane has not beaten Wichita State since 2022 having lost the last five meetings to fall to 6-9 overall and 3-4 at home against the Shockers. The Green Wave dropped its only match against the Shockers last season 1-3 in Wichita, Kansas, on October 24.
The Wave has lost the last three matchups against Wichita State in New Orleans with the most recent home defeat coming on November 10, 2024, in a 0-3 sweep. The last time the Green Wave defeated the Shockers overall was in Uptown on October 23, 2022, by a final score of 3-2. Tulane was led by Mackenzie Martin in the victory with 23 kills followed by Amarachi Osuji with 19. Kate Van Houten tallied 60 assists in the match while Jillian Dits recorded a team-high 29 digs.
Following this week's league action, the Wave will remain in the friendly confines of Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse to host Charlotte and UAB. Tulane will welcome the 49ers to Uptown on Friday, October 9, before squaring off against the Blazers on Sunday, October 11.
