ORLANDO, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Tulane bowling program will be back in action this weekend at the AMF Sky Lanes for the Destination Florida, hosted by Sacred Heart. The three-day tournament begins tomorrow and features a stacked 23-team field of 16 ranked teams, including the No. 17 Green Wave.
Â
The tournament begins with qualifying play split between two pools of 12 teams (one pool features 11 with a bye built in). Each team plays 11 games against the other squads in its pool to set the seeding for the final rounds of best-of-seven Baker match play. Tulane's pool features seven other ranked teams in No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 6 Youngstown State, No. 9 North Carolina A&T, No. 11 Wright State, No. 14 Niagara, and No. 20 UAB. Also in the pool are Alabama State, Emmanuel, St. Anslem, and Southern. The other pool is just as stacked with eight total ranked programs: No. 1 Jacksonville State, No. 3 Wichita State, No. 4 Arkansas State, No. 7 Louisiana Tech, No. 10 Sacred Heart, No. 16 Duquesne, No. 19 Bryant, and No. 25 Maryland Eastern Shore. Also in the pool is Delaware State, who is receiving votes. The remaining teams are Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M.
Â
Play begins Friday at 9:25 a.m. Â with five sets of five Baker matches. Saturday's action picks up at 8:25 a.m. with five traditional games. Play begins on Sunday at the same time with the final qualifying contest before competition shifts to the best-of-seven Baker match bracket format to determine a champion. All times are listed in central time.
Â
Tulane opens against No. 14 Niagara on Friday, the first of three ranked foes on the docket for day one. A match-up against in-state foe Southern follows before the Wave plays No. 6 Youngstown State. Next up is Alabama State, and the day closes against No. 11 Wright State. Day two will see Tulane square off against No. 9 NC A&T, St. Anslem, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 20 UAB, and Emmanuel. The final qualifier is against No. 2 Vanderbilt to open play on Sunday.
Â
The Wave last competed two weeks ago when the team hosted the Colonial Lanes Classic and placed fourth. Throughout the three-day tournament, Tulane tallied 13,584 pins at an average of 191.3 per game. The Wave was 10-3 overall on the weekend with all three losses coming to top-10 programs. Highlighting the action was senior Juanelyz Solla, who placed fourth on day two in traditional play to secure all-tournament recognition. Over five games, Solla totaled 1,049 pins with a score over 200 in four of her five games. All five Tulane bowlers finished in the top 25 of the standings with freshman Malia Briggs placing 11th to narrowly miss all-tournament honors by a single pin.
Â
Tulane will be back in action next weekend with the Bulldog Classic, hosted by in-state foe Louisiana State. However, the event will take place one state over in San Antonio, Texas. The three-day event runs from Friday, November 6, to Sunday, November 8. It's the penultimate event of the fall slate, as the Wave will compete one weekend later in the Track Kat Klash in Houston before taking a winter break.
