NEW ORLEANS – At long last, the 2026-27 women's basketball season has arrived. Tulane will open the campaign against Texas Southern tomorrow at home. The contest tips off at 4:00 p.m. as the first leg of a women's-men's doubleheader at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave's opener will stream on ESPN+ and can be heard on WRBH 88.3 FM or through the Varsity Network app with new voice of Tulane women's basketball Chase Williams on the call.
Â
Tomorrow's contest is just the third all-time meeting between the two programs with the all-time series split evenly at one win apiece. Tulane claimed the opening contest 62-56 at home in November of 2018. The Tigers recorded their win the following year in December with a score of 72-62.
Â
Tulane returns five players from last season's team: seniors Kanija Daniel and Jayda Brown, junior Sadie Shores, and sophomores Madison Gordon and Shiloh Kimpson. The Wave welcomes eight newcomers to squad, including freshmen Kennedy Simpson and Ja'Kyah Smith. The other six newcomers are all transfers: sophomore Makayla Carter (Nevada), sophomore Nataliyah Gray (Mississippi State), junior Khadee Hession (Georgetown), graduate Aizhanique Mayo (DePaul), graduate Asha Sra (Charleston Southern), and junior Edina Strausz (Davidson).
Â
Ashley Langford returns for her third season as the head coach of the Green Wave. The Tulane Hall of Famer is 97-57 overall in career and just three wins shy of reaching the century mark. Her counterpart for Texas Southern is Vernette Skeete, who is entering her fifth season at the helm for the Tigers. She is 36-86 overall in her career.
Â
Tulane went 11-20 last season with a 6-12 conference record. Texas Southern was 10-21 last year with a 6-12 SWAC clip. The Tigers were picked 10th out of 12 teams in the league's preseason poll.
Â
Kanija Daniel earned preseason praise from the league's coaches as she was selected to the American Preseason All-Conference Second Team. This comes after she was tabbed to the American All-Newcomer team upon last season's end, becoming one of just three Green Wave players to ever earn the distinction.
Â
Two of Tulane's newest players know what it's like to have an immediate impact. Aizhanique Mayo and Khadee Hession have both earned BIG EAST All-Freshman Team nods, claiming them a season apart at their respective institutions. Mayo secured her nod as a redshirt freshman in 2024 with Xavier, and Hession claimed her award the following year at Georgetown. Both could garner similar honors with the American presenting an all-newcomer team each season.
Â
Distributing the rock is paramount for former point guard Ashley Langford, and incoming transfer Asha Sra knows a thing or two about successful ball movement. The current graduate student led the Big South in assists during the regular season last year with 121 before finishing the campaign as a whole with 124 helpers. She averaged 4.6 assists per game, which would have led Tulane last season. Translating her numbers to the American Conference leaderboard from last year, Sra would have ranked fifth in the league for assist average. Of the four players ahead of her in those standings, two are no longer in the league, meaning Sra would actually slot third among the returners to the conference.
Â
Tulane will be comfortable at home this season with Green Wave fans having plenty of opportunities to see the program in action at Fogleman in Devlin. The Wave has 18 home games on the docket this season, the highest tally of home contests for the program since the 2006-07 season, which also featured 18. Furthermore, Tulane opens with five-straight home games, the longest streak of home contests to open a season in program history.
Â
Game two will see SEC foe Alabama travel to Uptown for a contest with Tulane. The Wave will play in the national spotlight on Sunday, November 8, as the battle against the Crimson Tide will air on ESPN2 at noon. Tulane is playing in one of just six linear television games featuring American Conference teams this season, and this is the third campaign in a row that the Wave will play in at least one nationally televised game. Only three other programs in the league (North Texas, Rice, South Florida) boast a similar streak.
Â
The aforementioned contest against the Tide is next up on the slate for Tulane with tip-off scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on ESPN2. The game can also be heard on WRBH 88.3 or through the Varsity Network app with Chase Williams, the new voice of Tulane women's basketball, on the call.
