Rono’s Record Highlights Friday Slate for Tulane

BOSTON & NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tulane indoor track and field program opened the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and the Music City Challenge today with a successful opening day of competition. Gilbert Rono's program record in the mile highlighted the day, which featured multiple new personal-best results.
At Boston University's Track and Tennis & Tennis Center Friday, Gilbert Rono and Silas Kiptanui highlighted the men's day of action at the David Hemery Valetine Invitational. In the mile, Rono ran a 4:01.61 to break the men's indoor program record. He finished 33rd in the event. In the 5,000 meters, Kiptanui posted a 13:38.75 to place ninth overall. His mark is good for second best all-time in men's program history. Bernard Cheruiyot was not far behind him, placing 12th in the event with his mark of 13:41.21. In the 3,000 meters, Rono set another personal best with an 8:10.70 as he placed 83rd.
The remainder of the team competed at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility in day one of the Music City Challenge. In the 60 meters, Zaria Parker ran a 7.57 to place sixth overall in the prelims and qualify for tomorrow's semifinals. She just missed her personal-best time of 7.56. Parker placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.28, also just barely missing her personal best (24.27). In the high jump. Sofie Groeninger recorded a 1.59 to place seventh, just missing her personal best of 1.62. In the weight throw, Alyssa Dismuke set a new personal best with her mark of 10.68.
Competition continues tomorrow with the second and final day of both meets. Upon the conclusion of tomorrow's action, the Green Wave will turn its attention to the LSU Twilight in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday, February 20.
