Kiptanui Runner-Up on First Day of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – Silas Kiptanui's runner-up finish in the 3,000m steeplechase highlighted Tulane's first day at the Raleigh Relays Thursday, hosted by North Carolina State at the Paul Derr Track Facility. Gilbert Rono added a top-10 mark in program history in the 1,500m to further highlight the opening day for the Green Wave.
Action opened with field events as Aiden Yang posted a 53.98m in the men's javelin to place 21st. In the women's javelin, Sofie Groeninger placed 25th with a mark of 37.91m.
Men's track events came next, and Gilbert Rono ran his way into the Wave record book with a time of 3:47.67 in the 1,500m, good for seventh in program history. He placed 70th in the event. Two other Wave athletes ran in the race, with Daniel Reza (3:53.90) placing 183rd and Paul James Pam (3:55.19) placing 195th.
The primary highlight of the afternoon was Silas Kiptanui's performance in the 3,000m steeplechase. He was the event's runner-up with a time of 8:29.21, finishing behind only Kentucky's Collins Kiprop Kipngok and his mark of 8:24.48. Kiptanui was denied the program's record by only his own time of 8:25.51 from last season.
A trio of Tulane athletes hit the track for the 5,000m with Rogerio Amaral leading the way at 14:15.54, placing 64th. Tommy Rice was 80th with a time of 14:19.24, and Cooper Sorsen was 204th with his mark of 15:19.40. The day concluded with the 10,000m, and Juan Giron was the lone Tulane participant. He placed 88th with a time of 30:59.96.
Action continues tomorrow with day two of the three-day meet. Friday's slate kicks off at 9:00 a.m. CT with field events. Track events get underway at 9:45 a.m. CT with short distance races before the women's distance events take off. The meet will stream on ACC Network Xtra during a three-hour window between 6:00-9:00 p.m. CT.
