Tulane Set to Compete in American Outdoor Track and Field Championships

DENTON, Texas – Action begins tomorrow for the 2026 American Outdoor Track and Field Championships as Tulane looks to improve upon last season's program-best finishes. The three-day meet is hosted by North Texas at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium.

Competition begins tomorrow, May 14. Sofie Groeninger will be the first Green Wave athlete to compete when she begins her first event of the heptathlon, the 100m hurdles, at 10:30 a.m. Cara Salsberry will participate in the women's hammer throw, and Aiden Yang rounds out tomorrow's field competitors in the men's javelin. On the track, Tulane's action begins with the women's 1,500m prelims, featuring Dana Rojas Vazquez, Jasper Newton, and Elena Liano-Rengel. In the men's event thereafter, Illia Kunin, Rogerio Amaral, Paul James Pam, and Gilbert Rono will race. The Wave will see runners in the women's and men's 200m with Marissa Gordon and Zaria Parker hitting the track on the women's side. For the men, it will be Alexander Montoro and Andrew Bamberg. Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas will compete in the women's 400m hurdles prelims to precede the women's and men's 10,000m races, which will end the day. Blezzin Kimutai is set to run for the women, and on the men's side it will be Juan Giron and Tommy Rice.
On day two Friday, Groeninger will finish off the final three events of the heptathlon while also competing in the women's shot put. Brianna Brand will compete in the women's long jump, and Presley Wolfe will see action in the women's pole vault to round out the Friday field action. Action on the track starts up with the women's 800m prelims, in which Maria Alduan, Eliza Brand, Liano-Rengel, and Newton will race. In the men's race, Tulane puts forth Roman Schrader, Jalen St. Fort, and Samuel Cohen. Brianna Brand and Parker will race in the women's 100m prelims, and Bamberg will run in the men's race. A trio of women will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase as Petra Dos Santos, Allison Hall, and Alex Sharp all race. For the men, it will be Silas Kiptanui as he finishes off the day for Tulane.
Saturday is the final day of competition, and action begins for Tulane with Salsberry participating in the women's discus. Moving to the track, Hall, Sharp, Dos Santos, Rojas Vazquez, and Kimutai will all race in the women's 5,000m. An even larger contingent will hit the track in the men's race as Tulane will be represented by Pam, Kiptanui, Cooper Sorsen, Giron, Zach Van Houten, Rono, Amaral, and Kunin. The day and meet will end with relay races as Tulane will compete in the men's and women's 4x100m and 4x400m runs.
Tulane placed fourth on the women's side in last season's conference meet, and the men finished seventh. Both placements are program bests.
Multiple Green Wave athletes enter the weekend holding top-100 marks in NCAA Division I. Kimutai holds a pair as her 10,000m time of 33:28.35 is 57th nationally, and she is 97th with her 5,000m mark of 15:41.81. Her 10,000m time is a program record that she set at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Salsberry delivered a 59.54m in the hammer to set a new program record in the Tom Tellez Invitational, which ranks 67th in the country this season. Groeninger is 60th in the heptathlon with 5,264 points.
For the men, Kiptanui is fifth nationally with a 3,000m steeplechase time of 8:25.16. Amaral just checks into the top 100 with a 29:10.35 in the 10,000m, which is 100th.
After this weekend's American Conference Championships, Tulane will set sights on NCAA competitions. The NCAA Championship First Round for the east region takes place in Lexington, Kentucky, from May 27 to 30. Any Green Wave national qualifiers will participate in that competition with potential advancers then finishing off the season in the NCAA Outdoor Championship June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
