Tulane Wraps American Outdoor Championships with Three More Medals
May 16, 2026 | Track & Field
DENTON, Texas – Tulane finished the 2026 American Outdoor Track and Field Championships strong on Saturday as the Green Wave compiled three more medals, including another gold for Silas Kiptanui. Blezzin Kimutai took home a silver, and Cara Salsberry notched her second bronze of the week at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium as the three-day conference championship meet came to a close.
Just like she did on Thursday, Cara Salsberry started the day off right for Tulane by securing her second medal of the weekend. In the women's discus, Salsberry hurled a personal-best 51.75m to better her second-best all-time mark in program history, which earned her a third-place result in the competition. By securing a bronze medal, she becomes the first Wave medalist in the women's discus since Tulane joined the American and the first overall since 2004 (Jelena Jurlina, bronze, CUSA).
More medals came via the men's and women's 5,000m races. Silas Kiptanui earned his second gold in as many days, running a 14:04.35 in the men's race to pace the field and secure more hardware after his gold in last night's 3,000m steeplechase. Rogerio Amaral added a point for Tulane as he placed eighth with a mark of 14:39.49. A full contingent ran for Tulane with four more athletes finishing. They were Tommy Rice (14:56.55), Gilbert Rono (15:16.17), Juan Giron (15:24.19), and Zach Van Houten (15:31.56).
The women's race saw Blezzin Kimutai secure her second silver medal of the weekend. She ran a 16:42.84 to place second and add another medal to her neck after claiming silver in Thursday's 10,000m race. Dana Rojas Vazquez placed eighth today to secure a point for the Wave with her time of 17:21.66. Petra Dos Santos was right behind in ninth with a mark of 17:23.10. Alex Sharp (17:47.12) and Allison Hall (18:12.87) also competed in the race.
Tulane scored in both the women's and men's 1,500m finals. For the women, Jasper Newton claimed three points for the Wave by placing sixth after running a 4:33.63. On the men's side, Amaral notched a single point by pacing 3:54.22 to finish eighth. Gilbert Rono placed 10th in the race with his time of 3:58.10, and Rojas Vazquez just missed points in the women's race by finishing ninth behind a mark of 4:38.32.
Newton added more points in the women's 800m final, placing sixth once more. Her time of 2:16.68 nabbed three more points for Tulane.
The Wave saw action in all four relay races with the women's and men's 4x100m runs starting things off on the track. Tulane's women's team of Bella Carroll, Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas, Brianna Brand, and Marissa Gordon clocked a mark of 47.47, a season best, to place ninth. The men also finished ninth as the contingent of Alexander Montoro, Andrew Bamberg, Roman Schrader, and Samuel Cohen ran a time of 45.49. The punctuation of the three-day meet was the 4x400m relay races. For the women, the quartet of Dumonteil Cabanas, Gordon, Maria Alduan, and Carroll posted a time of 3:48.64 to finish 11th. On the men's side, Tulane was ninth with a time of 3:21.93, posted by Montoro, Bamberg, Schrader, and Cohen.
Tulane finished the meet in ninth on both the men's and women's leaderboards. The Wave men tallied 32 points while the women notched 51 points. With the three medals earned today, Tulane's three-day tally for the meet is seven in total. Kiptanui earned the lone Green Wave golds with Kimutai notching both silvers for Tulane. Salsberry gathered a pair of bronze medals, and Dos Santos joined her with a bronze.
Up next is the first round of the NCAA Championships. Tulane will compete in the east regional, which is hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Qualifying Wave athletes will compete May 27-30 for an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, from June 10-13.
