Kiptanui’s Gold Highlights Successful Day Two at American Outdoor Championships

DENTON, Texas – Tulane picked up two more medals on the second day of the American Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium. Silas Kiptanui earned gold while Petra Dos Santos claimed bronze, both in the 3,000m steeplechase, while four other athletes secured points for the Green Wave.
Tulane saved the best for last today as the women's and men's 3,000m steeplechase ended the day on a high note. The nightcap was the men's race, which Silas Kiptanui won with his time of 8:57.46. He repeats as the event's gold medalist after also topping the leaderboard last season. In the women's race, Petra Dos Santos crossed the line in third with her mark of 10:34.42. Her time claimed not only bronze but also checked in as the sixth-best mark in program history. Allison Hall added four points for Tulane by placing fifth in the race with a time of 10:45.14.
On the women's side, Tulane claimed points in three more events, including the heptathlon. In the long jump, Brianna Brand placed seventh with a mark of 5.95m to notch two points. Presley Wolfe added one point with her eighth-place result in the pole vault as she cleared a high of 3.89m.
The heptathlon concluded today with the final three events as Sofie Groeninger placed sixth overall. She entered the day in fourth after the opening four events yesterday, and the competition picked back up this morning with the long jump, in which Groeninger placed 12th after a mark of 5.07m. In the javelin, she delivered a mark of 37.61m to place fifth, and she polished off the heptathlon in the 800m with a time of 2:30.35 to finish eighth. In total, Groeninger compiled 5,127 points to place sixth and secure three points for the Wave.
Groeninger also competed in the women's shot put immediately after wrapping up the heptathlon. She posted a personal best of 14.07m to place 10th in the event.
Other Wave performers on the track included a trio in the women's 800m prelims, highlighted by Jasper Newton's 2:12.37 to place sixth, which qualifies her for tomorrow's final. Maria Alduan finished 10th after running 2:13.84, and Eliza Brand was 20th with a time of 2:17.14. In the men's race, Samuel Cohen was 14th with a time of 1:52.76, and Roman Schrader was 21st with a mark of 1:58.82. Rounding out the Wave competitors is a trio in the women's and men's 100m prelims. For the women, Zaria Parker was 14th with a time of 11.67 while Brianna Brand finished 19th after running an 11.89. For the men, Andrew Bamberg posted a time of 10.96 to finish 20th.
After two days of action, Tulane is fifth in the women's meet with a total of 30 points. On the men's side, the Wave is sixth with 20 points.
Tomorrow is the final day of the American Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Tulane will see action in just one more field event, the women's discus with Cara Salsberry competing. Tomorrow's track slate features the 4x100m and 4x400m relay races as well as the men's and women's 5,000m events. The finals of the men's and women's 1,500m and the women's 800m will take place for the qualified Wave athletes.
